A new nine-part podcast, Ghost: The Disappearance of Sandra Collins, is bringing renewed attention to the unsolved case of the 28-year-old woman who vanished from Killala, County Mayo, on 4 December 2000. The series is produced and hosted by Nicola Tallant of Crime World, alongside fellow journalist Jenny Friel, and revisits one of Ireland's most enduring missing-persons mysteries.

Sandra was last seen alive shortly after 11 p.m. on the night she disappeared, at a local takeaway in Killala, where she bought a large bag of chips. It was an ordinary end to an evening that would become the last confirmed sighting of her. Her aunt raised the alarm the following day when Sandra failed to turn up where expected, setting off what would become a massive manhunt across land and sea in the small coastal town.

Five days into the search, a physical trace was finally found: Sandra's fleece jacket, discovered on a local pier. It remains one of the few concrete pieces of evidence ever recovered in the case, and it did little to answer the central question of what happened to her that December night.

For years, the case sat in limbo, officially classified as a missing person inquiry even as suspicions mounted. That changed in 2010, when investigators formally upgraded the case to murder, acknowledging what many close to Sandra had long feared. The reclassification opened the door to a criminal trial, during which evidence was heard that Sandra had been in a relationship with a local married man, Martin Earley. He was identified as a suspect in the case, but after five weeks of evidence, he was acquitted.

Despite the trial and the decades of investigation that followed, Sandra Collins' disappearance remains unsolved. No one has ever been convicted in connection with her death, and the full circumstances of what happened to her in Killala that night have never been established.

Sandra was the eldest of six children, and her family — including relatives Bridie Collins and Patrick Collins — have spent the past two and a half decades searching for answers. The new podcast series revisits the case in detail across its nine episodes, examining the timeline of events, the investigation, the trial, and the questions that still linger a quarter-century later.
