Remmo-klanen

Berlin kinship group linked to organised crime and the 2019 Dresden jewel heist

Remmo-klanen is the term used in German law enforcement and criminology for a large Berlin-based family and kinship group that German authorities and media associate with organised crime — including robbery, theft and gang-related offences. The designation is not an official legal category but a descriptive term applied in police reports, indictments and judgments when accused or convicted individuals are linked to this kinship structure. The family has Lebanese roots and settled in Berlin, where it has built up over generations a close-knit network of family members spread across the city's various districts.

Abdul Salam R. is presented in media and police accounts as a central patriarch figure within the clan and is among the individuals who have been the subject of official attention in connection with investigations into the clan's activities. In a true crime context, Remmo-klanen is particularly associated with the jewel robbery at the Grünes Gewölbe in Dresden on 25 November 2019, regarded as one of the most spectacular museum thefts in German legal history. In that robbery, a number of unique Baroque jewels and art objects were stolen from the Saxon state museum. The case led to lengthy criminal proceedings, and several people connected to Remmo-klanen were charged and subsequently convicted in connection with the robbery.

The legal concept of the 'clan' in German law does not rest on any separate clan legislation, but on the concrete application of criminal law and the rules on organised crime to the individuals involved. Affiliation with Remmo-klanen is used by the prosecution as a contextual factor illuminating the organised, network-based element of the offences in question, but clan membership does not in itself constitute a criminal offence under German law. In the Krimidex articles where the term appears — including 'Remmo-Clan Berlin', 'Abdul Salam R. – Remmo-Clan Patriarch' and 'The Dresden Grünes Gewölbe Jewel Heist 2019' — 'Remmo-klanen' refers exclusively to this crime-associated Berlin family as a social and criminal structure, not to a registered organisation or state-recognised entity.
