triple murder

Descriptive term for the killing of three people; assessed under § 237 in Danish law

Triple murder is a descriptive term used in everyday speech and in the media for cases in which three people have been killed — typically by the same perpetrator or in the same course of events. Under Danish law, the term is not an independent, statutorily defined criminal category, and it therefore does not in itself alter the legal classification of the act.

The legal assessment is based on the Danish Penal Code (straffeloven) § 237, which defines manslaughter as the killing of another person. The provision sets a penalty range of imprisonment from 5 years up to life. In principle, each individual killing is assessed as a separate violation of § 237.

Where several people are killed, the punishment is in practice significantly increased. The number of victims is a central aggravating factor in sentencing, and weight is also given to the gravity of the act, any prior planning and the perpetrator's motive. In such circumstances the courts may impose the maximum penalty — life imprisonment.
